Innate immunity is the first line of defense and coordinates the more complex and specialized adaptive immune system. In addition to defense, the innate immune system provides various levels of support to cells and systems within the body that are necessary for normal function. ​ The consequences of a poorly functioning innate immune system are broad and implicated in nearly every disease.
